About Ethereum Classic
Ethereum Classic (ETC) emerged from the 2016 DAO hack, when the Ethereum community split over whether to reverse the blockchain to recover stolen funds. ETC upheld 'Code is Law', refusing to alter history. This foundational event defined its identity as a censorship-resistant, proof-of-work chain.
In 2020, the Phoenix hard fork aligned ETC with Ethereum's Istanbul protocol, ensuring technical compatibility. Later that year, Thanos switched the mining algorithm to Etchash, extending support for smaller GPUs and boosting network security.
The MESS (Modified Exponential Subjective Scoring) mechanism, deployed in October 2020, penalized large-scale blockchain reorganizations, significantly raising the cost of 51% attacks. After Ethereum's 2022 Merge, many displaced miners migrated to ETC, increasing hashrate from ~24 TH/s to over 150 TH/s, and later surpassing 300 TH/s by 2025, making attacks impractical.
Looking ahead, the Olympia upgrade (ECIPs 1111-1114) targets 2026, introducing EIP-1559-style fees directed to a community-controlled reserve and DAO, ensuring sustainable development funding while preserving ETC's fixed supply and PoW consensus.
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a hard fork of Ethereum, so it has no unique co-founders. Its core contributors include:
Bob Summerwill: Executive Director of the ETC Cooperative, a key figure in the ecosystem since 2016, previously a core developer at Ethereum.
Donald McIntyre: Editor and community manager at the ETC Cooperative, responsible for content and communications.
Isaac Ardis: Core developer at the ETC Cooperative, focused on the Core-Geth client, with extensive contributions to the protocol.
Note: Charles Hoskinson, an early Ethereum co-founder, later founded Cardano and is not directly involved with ETC.
